NDS channel drains and trench drains
A channel drain, also called a trench drain, is a narrow grated channel set flush in concrete or pavers. It catches sheet flow across a driveway, patio or pool deck and carries it to pipe. Yankocy stocks NDS Micro, Mini, Spee-D and 5" Pro Series channel, Dura-Slope trench drain, NDS catch basins and steel trench drain wholesale.

Which NDS load class and grate does the job need?
NDS rates channel systems by load class, and the grate sets the class as much as the channel does. NDS bases the ratings on the channel encased in concrete and installed to its instructions. Some installs need a concrete collar.
| NDS class | Load | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1-60 psi | Pedestrians, bicycles, wheelchairs |
| B | 61-175 psi | Cars and light trucks under 20 mph |
| C | 176-325 psi | Pneumatic-tire forklifts and tractor trailers under 20 mph, H-20 |
| D | 326-575 psi | Hard-tire forklifts under 20 mph, H-20 |
NDS rates Dura Slope channel and grates for 61-175 psi. Adding the DS-200 ductile iron frame raises it to 326-575 psi.
Dura Slope trench drain
Dura Slope is NDS's HDPE trench drain for longer and heavier runs. Sloped sections fall 0.34" each, a built-in 0.7% slope, and neutral sections are flat. Sections are numbered and set in order. NDS gives a maximum run of 96' without neutral sections and 132' with one. A bottom outlet adapter ties into 4" SDR 35.
NDS catch basins and steel trench drain
NDS square catch basins collect runoff from lawns, downspouts, patios and walks, with a built-in sump that traps grit before the pipe. NDS makes the 9" and 12" basins in polypropylene and the 18" in HDPE. We stock 9", 12" and 18" square, plus grates, Spee-D basins, pop-up emitters, EZflow 4" pipe and backwater valves.
For wider openings we stock steel EZ drain in 6" x 4', 5' and 6', steel Ready Form in 8" and 12" x 4', and cast iron trench grate in 8"x24" and 12"x24".

Questions about NDS channel drains
What is the difference between a channel drain and a trench drain?
The terms are mostly used interchangeably. NDS files both under one heading. In the trade, trench drain often means a wider, deeper or heavier-duty system, such as Dura Slope or steel trench, and channel drain the shallow lines used at patios and driveways. Both catch surface water through a grate and carry it to pipe.
What is the NDS 4-inch channel drain?
The NDS system closest to 4" is Spee-D. Its grates are 4-1/8" wide on a 4-3/4" wide, 3-3/4" high channel, in 4' or 10' lengths. The bottom outlet takes 3" and 4" fittings. NDS recommends it for moderate flows from driveways, patios and pool areas. Yankocy stocks it.
What is an NDS drain?
NDS (National Diversified Sales) makes plastic stormwater drainage, including channel drains, catch basins, dry wells and pop-up emitters. NDS was founded in 1972 and says it made the first plastic catch basin for landscape drainage. Yankocy stocks NDS channel drains, catch basins and the Flo-Well dry well wholesale.
How does a channel drain connect to pipe?
Through an end outlet or bottom outlet made for the system. Spee-D outlets take 3" and 4" fittings and are solvent welded. NDS connects Dura Slope to 4" SDR 35 with a bottom outlet adapter, or to 4" schedule 40 with a flexible coupling. Follow the NDS install guide.
