Diamond mesh lath weights and sheet size
AMICO diamond mesh lath is expanded from hot-dip galvanized G-60 steel sheet into small diamond openings. Sheets are a minimum 27" x 97", about 1/8" thick, and packed 10 sheets to a bundle. The 2.5 and 3.4 lb weights are made to ASTM C847; AMICO notes that 1.75 lb lath is not a weight defined in C847.
Heavier lath carries more steel per square yard and is stiffer between supports. The project spec, or ASTM C1063 for portland cement plaster, sets the weight required for the framing spacing, so check the drawings before you order.
| Weight | Per AMICO sheet | ASTM C847 | Yankocy stocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.75 lb/sq yd | Lightest weight | Not defined in C847 | Flat only |
| 2.5 lb/sq yd | 5.0 lb per sheet | Meets C847 | Flat and self-furring |
| 3.4 lb/sq yd | 6.8 lb per sheet | Meets C847 | Flat and self-furring |
When is self-furred lath required?
Self-furred lath has dimples or V-grooves pressed into the sheet that hold it about 1/4" off the backing. That gap lets the scratch coat push through and wrap the mesh, which is how the stucco keys to the lath.
AMICO notes that self-furred lath is required over solid substrates such as sheathing or masonry under current codes, and is not required over framing members less than 1-5/8" wide. Flat lath is used where the plaster can wrap the mesh on its own, such as over open framing or furring.
Where lath goes in a three-coat stucco wall
Three-coat stucco is a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat. The lath sits under the scratch coat and holds the whole system to the wall. For the rest of the wall, Yankocy stocks EZ Wall base coat in 90 lb bags and California Stucco finish in 12 stock colors, 94 lb bags, with non-stock colors, Texture Flex, Elastocote and Rollflex on special order.
Order casing bead for stops at openings and edges, and double-V expansion joint to break up large panels. Paper-backed Steeltex lath is covered on its own page.
Questions about wire lath
What is lath in stucco?
Lath is the base the stucco hangs on. Metal lath is galvanized expanded steel mesh fastened to the wall, and the scratch coat is pushed through the openings so it locks around the mesh once it cures. Yankocy stocks galvanized diamond wire lath in 1.75 lb flat and in 2.5 and 3.4 lb, flat or self-furring.
What is the best lath for stucco?
It depends on the backing and the spec. AMICO notes self-furred lath is required over solid substrates like sheathing or masonry, while flat lath suits open framing. The project drawings, or ASTM C1063 for portland cement plaster, set the lath weight for the support spacing. 2.5 and 3.4 lb diamond lath are made to ASTM C847.
What sheet size is metal lath?
AMICO diamond mesh lath comes in sheets of at least 27" x 97", packed 10 sheets to a bundle. A 2.5 lb sheet weighs about 5.0 lb and a 3.4 lb sheet about 6.8 lb. Call Yankocy at (203) 261-4955 to confirm bundle quantities for your order.
