6x6 welded wire mesh (re-mesh) for concrete
Welded wire mesh, called re-mesh or remesh in the yard, is a grid of steel wires welded at every crossing. It is set in concrete slabs, walks and driveways to control cracking. Yankocy stocks 6x6 W1.4 (10/10) mesh in 5' x 10' sheets and 5' x 150' rolls, and heavy 6x6 W2.9 (6/6) sheets, wholesale.

How do you read a wire mesh designation?
Take 6x6 W1.4 x W1.4. The first two numbers are wire spacing in inches: 6" one way, 6" the other. The W numbers give the wire size. W means smooth wire, and the number is the cross-sectional area in hundredths of a square inch, so W1.4 is 0.014 sq in.
ASTM dropped wire gauges in 1970, but the old names stuck. 6x6 10/10 is the same mesh as 6x6 W1.4 x W1.4. 6x6 6/6 is 6x6 W2.9 x W2.9. The Wire Reinforcement Institute recommends ordering by W number.
Common 6x6 mesh styles
Wire diameters are from the Wire Reinforcement Institute wire size tables. Weights are approximate.
| Style (W number) | Old gauge name | Wire diameter (in) | Steel area (sq in/ft) | Weight (lb/100 sq ft) | Yankocy stock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6x6 W1.4 x W1.4 | 6x6 10/10 | 0.134 | 0.028 | 21 | Sheets and rolls |
| 6x6 W2.0 x W2.0 | 6x6 8/8 | 0.160 | 0.040 | 29 | Not stocked |
| 6x6 W2.9 x W2.9 | 6x6 6/6 | 0.192 | 0.058 | 42 | Sheets |
| 6x6 W4.0 x W4.0 | 6x6 4/4 | 0.226 | 0.080 | 58 | Not stocked |
Sheets or rolls
Rolls cover long runs and are easy to haul and store. The trade-off is that roll mesh has to be unrolled and flattened before placing. Sheets lie flat from the bundle, so they are easier to set and hold at the right height. Yankocy carries 10/10 mesh both ways and 6/6 heavy mesh in 5' x 10' sheets. Sheets of either gauge come 100 to a bundle, and rolls 9 to a bundle.
Keeping mesh off the ground
Mesh only controls cracks if it ends up inside the slab. The Wire Reinforcement Institute puts it in the middle of a 4" slab and 2" below the top of 5" and 6" slabs. It calls for supports 2 to 3 feet apart, and it does not count walking mesh in or hooking it up during the pour as proper placement. Yankocy stocks 2" mesh-ups and re-mesh chairs for the job.
Which mesh gauge does a slab need?
WRI's guide for 4" lightly reinforced slabs on grade calls for W1.4 mesh up to 35 feet between joints or walls, and heavier wire as that distance grows, up to W2.9 or W3.0 at 61 to 75 feet. Follow the drawings where a style is specified.
Questions about welded wire mesh
What gauge is 6x6 wire mesh?
The two common styles are 10 gauge and 6 gauge. 6x6 10/10 has 10-gauge wire, now called W1.4, about 0.134" in diameter. 6x6 6/6 has 6-gauge wire, called W2.9, about 0.192" in diameter. Yankocy stocks both.
What is 6x6 10 10 WWF?
Welded wire fabric with wires 6" apart each way, made of 10-gauge wire. Its current name is 6x6 W1.4 x W1.4. It weighs about 21 lb per 100 sq ft and is the standard light mesh for slabs, walks and patios.
What is the difference between remesh and rebar?
Remesh is a factory-welded grid of light wire, sold in sheets or rolls and mainly used to control cracking in slabs. Rebar is heavier deformed bar, cut and tied on site, and carries structural load in footings, walls and structural slabs.
What are the standard sizes of wire mesh for concrete?
For flatwork, the common styles are 6x6 W1.4 x W1.4 (10/10) and 6x6 W2.9 x W2.9 (6/6). WRI puts typical sheets at 5' to 10' wide and 10' to 20' long, with rolls usually 150' or 200' long. Yankocy stocks 5' x 10' sheets, 100 per bundle, and 5' x 150' rolls, 9 per bundle.
