What is Anti-Hydro?
Anti-Hydro, sold by the maker as Anti-Hydro AH-1, is a non-corrosive solution of organic and inorganic chemicals. The company has made it since 1904. It is mixed into the batch, not brushed on a finished surface. The maker says it cuts water demand, bleed water, capillaries and shrinkage, and speeds the set.
The result is integrally waterproof concrete or mortar that resists water pressure from either side. The maker lists basements, foundations, elevator pits, tanks, pools, chimneys, slabs on grade, shotcrete and cold-weather work. It states AH-1 complies with NSF Standard 61 for potable water.

At 1.5 gallons per yard, a 5 gallon pail treats a little over 3 cubic yards of concrete.
Mix design limits
- Use Type 1 or Type 2 Portland cement. The concrete spec also allows Type 1L.
- At least 526 lb of cement per cubic yard (5.6 bags) for waterproof concrete.
- Water-cement ratio between 0.44 and 0.56, maximum 4" slump, 3,000 psi minimum.
- Add at the job site or the ready-mix plant. Do not retemper the mix.
- Do not use in prestressed or post-tensioned concrete.
- Sealed containers keep 3 years from manufacture.
What to order with it

What is the best waterproofing additive for concrete?
It depends on the spec. Anti-Hydro is one long-established option: an integral admixture dosed at 1.5 gallons per cubic yard that makes the concrete itself resist water from either side. Other approaches include crystalline admixtures and surface-applied coatings. Follow the project engineer's specification.
What cement additive can be used to waterproof concrete?
