Thoroseal waterproof coating and Thoro products
Thoroseal is Sika's Portland cement-based waterproof coating for concrete and masonry, sold today as Sika Thoroseal-581. Mixed with Acryl 60, it resists water pressure from either side of the wall, which is why it's specified for foundations and basement walls. Yankocy stocks Thoroseal-581 in 50 lb bags, white and gray, with the rest of the Thoro line for yards and waterproofing applicators.

What is Thoroseal?
Sika Thoroseal-581, formerly MSeal 581, is a blend of cement, graded sand and additives, polymer-modified on site with Acryl 60. It waterproofs the wall, cuts air infiltration and still lets vapor out. It also hides minor surface defects in architectural concrete.
Sika lists it for basement and retaining walls, foundations, cisterns, bridges and tunnels, above and below grade, inside and out. Substrates are cast-in-place and precast concrete, block, brick and porous stone. Sika certifies it to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 for potable water contact.

What is Thoroseal used for?
Thoroseal waterproofs concrete and masonry walls. It is a cement-based coating that resists water pressure from the outside and the inside of the wall. It also blocks air infiltration and evens out the look of concrete. Sika lists foundations, basement and retaining walls, cisterns and tunnels among its uses.
Is Thoroseal suitable for basements?
Yes. Sika lists basement walls and foundations as core uses and rates Thoroseal-581 for positive and negative hydrostatic pressure. It is not for walls with active leaks or moving cracks. Sika calls for stopping leaks and static cracks with Waterplug first. Ventilate below-grade spaces to limit condensation.
What colors does Thoroseal come in?
Sika makes Thoroseal-581 in white and standard gray, with custom colors at a 5,000 lb minimum. Yankocy stocks both standard colors, white and gray, in 50 lb bags (we don't carry custom colors), along with the Acryl 60 it mixes with, and delivers them on our own trucks from Monroe, CT.
How do you apply Thoroseal waterproofing?
At spec level, per Sika: repair cracks and plug any leaks with Waterplug. Mix each 50 lb bag with about 6 quarts of Acryl 60 and water using a slow-speed drill. Let it rest 10 minutes, then apply a base coat and a topcoat at 40 to 90 F. The installer follows Sika's full data sheet.
